How to identify authentic Indian handicrafts

Handmade and machine-made can look alike in a thumbnail. Up close — and in how a piece is described — the difference is clear. Here's what to look for before you buy.

Look for the marks of the hand

  • Small variations: no two handmade pieces are identical. Perfect uniformity often means a machine.
  • Weave and knot: in textiles, an irregular reverse side and visible hand-knotting are good signs.
  • Glaze and form: in pottery, slight asymmetry and pooled glaze read as handmade.
  • Finish: hand tool marks, hand-rolled hems, and hand-set joins all tell.

Read the listing like a sceptic

Genuine sellers are specific: the material, the region, the technique, the time it took, how it will vary. Vague copy, stock imagery, and impossibly low prices point the other way.

Trust verified origin over claims

Anyone can type 'authentic'. A verified GI mark or a marketplace that verifies its makers turns a claim into something checkable. That's the difference between hoping and knowing.

Frequently asked

Are small flaws a bad sign?
Usually the opposite. Minor, natural variation is the signature of handwork. What you want to avoid is damage — not character.
Does a higher price guarantee authenticity?
No. Price alone proves nothing. Verified origin, a named maker, and specific craft detail are the real signals.
